Born and bred in New York City, Nico De Vita is a 22-year-old photographer who recently earned a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Photography from the University of Binghamton in upstate New York. Beginning as a teenager in high school, he primarily uses 35mm analog and point-and-shoot cameras to capture color and black-and-white images.
Throughout the years, Nico continues to find inspiration outside of his neighborhood in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and has flourished outside of New York by taking his camera and shooting as much as possible during these time periods. He has also learned that he needs to be very patient with his surroundings in order to develop his creative lens. This enables each picture to tell its own unique story, which occasionally seems to endure a lifetime. These slowed down moments in time allow Nico's photos to truly speak for themselves and the environment that they are set in, which include projects from holidays in Colombia , Berlin, and Rio De Janeiro to name a few. Nico’s most recent work comes from his semester abroad in Chile in which he shot consistently for nearly half a year and has accumulated a bunch of work for his portfolio.
The beauty of photography to Nico is in his ability to convey artistic expression in settings that the audience is unfamiliar with, without uttering a single word. You can hear the wind brush against your ear and pass through the brushes in the middle of the Patagonia regions of Chile and Argentina. You can feel the dry heat waves and scorching sun agitate your skin in the desert of San Pedro in Chile. Even in Buenos Aires, a city of more than 15 million people, you can hear a pin drop in a cemetery or an empty street. As the spectator, you can fully integrate with the image and build your own narrative and interpretations of what you see.
For Nico, this is just the beginning as his artistic and creative lens continues to expand. Whether it’s in NYC or places far and beyond, beauty lies everywhere he and his camera go. Photography is more than simply pressing a button; it is a narrative that can be conveyed with the ideal balance of patience and time in his esteemed artistic profession for years to come.
